TOURS IN LYON
The best known district in Lyon is the Saint Jean area, which has very impressive
architecture and a fine cathedral. There is an astronomical clock inside the cathedral
that is from the 16th century. The restaurants are also very popular. Behind this
building is the jardin archeologique, which houses the remnants of early Christian
thermal baths and a baptistery. The area has many Renaissance buildings, which are
very rare in Europe. The facades of many of the buildings in this area are worth
seeing. The likes of numbers 17, 24, 28, 42, 52, and 58 all have great courtyards and
the house fronts of numbers 21 and 37 are real gems. If one wants to see more
facades, take a visit to the place du Gouvernement to witness the facades of numbers
1,5 and 7. The streets are well paved and if one keeps walking, they are sure to find
the Old Lyon part of town where most of the area is pedestrianised. You can go on
great relaxing walks around this area. There are lots of courtyards and passages that
make this area very accessible and easy to get around. The popular area around this
neck of the woods is the Place des Terreaux, which is always crowded with tourists as
well as locals and there are loads of shops to keep you rummaging around for a few
hours. There are plenty of bars in this area also. Walking to the end of rue Saint Jean,
you come across the place du Change, where one can follow on down the rue Soufflot
until you meet rue Gadagne, where the two museums of Historique de Lyon and the
International de la Marionnette museum are located. The beautiful 16th century
Renaissance Hotel de Gadagne is located here also.
There is a large straight avenue which links up Place Bellecour with the Hotel de
Ville and this part of town is where you will find all the beautiful people hanging
about.
